Day 1
Welcome to America’s Capital

• Proceed through registration, and join your fellow Student Leaders for welcome activities while your family attends orientation.
• Participate in your first leadership-group meeting, and learn more about your teacher leader, your group, and the program’s activities.
• Find out more about the history of People to People, and get to know the staff who will be guiding you through the program.
• Hear from special guest Ken Walsh, the chief White House correspondent for U.S. News & World Report, about the role of the president in the nation and the world.
• Relax with your roommates before bed checks and lights out.

• Enjoy breakfast with your leadership group at the hotel.
• Board the motor coach, and meet your driver and delegation manager for the week.
• Explore President Lincoln’s Cottage, where the president and his family spent their summers during the Civil War.
• Share lunch with fellow Student Leaders in the District before making your way to the Jefferson and Lincoln memorials.
• Snap your picture in front of the White House.
• Get acquainted with all of the American presidents from their paintings in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery.
• Share your thoughts on the day’s events with your peers during your leadership meeting.

• Witness the nation’s largest Presidents Day parade through Old Town Alexandria.
• See George Washington’s beloved home at the Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens.
• After learning about the man, explore his memorial by visiting the Washington Monument.
• Examine each president’s unique place in history at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History’s exhibit The American Presidency: A Glorious Burden.
• Understand the presidency in a personal way as keynote speaker Mary Eisenhower reflects on her grandfather’s years in the White House.
• Share your thoughts on the day’s events with your peers during your leadership meeting.

• Explore the Capitol, and learn more about the branches of government.
• Board your motor coach for Arlington National Cemetery. Once there, walk among thousands of fallen soldiers honored by their country for their service.
• Make your way up to John F. Kennedy’s gravesite to observe the Eternal Flame.
• Witness the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns, and understand the impact each soldier’s life has made on this country.
• Pay your respects and search out loved ones’ names at the Korean War Veterans and Vietnam Veterans memorials.
• Participate in a commemorative wreath ceremony before heading to the World War II Memorial and dinner.
• Imagine the evening of President Lincoln’s assassination while you take in a production at the fateful Ford’s Theatre.
• Enjoy a final leadership meeting upon arrival at the hotel.

• Awake early for your family’s arrival or transport via private shuttle to the airport.
• Enjoy your final People to People breakfast.
