Day 1
Welcome to Washington, D.C.
- Proceed through registration, and join your fellow People to People Student Leaders for welcome activities while your family attends orientation.
- Participate in your first leadership-group meeting, and learn more about your teacher leader, your group, and the program’s activities.
- Find out more about the history of People to People Ambassador Programs, and get to know the staff who will be guiding you through the program.
- Hear from a noteworthy guest speaker.
- Relax with your roommates before bed checks and lights out.
Day 2
Washington, D.C. — Remembering the past, building the future
- Board your motor coach for Arlington National Cemetery. Once there, walk among the graves of thousands of fallen soldiers who are honored by their country for their service.
- Make your way up to John F. Kennedy’s gravesite to observe the Eternal Flame.
- Witness the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns, and understand the impact each soldier’s life has made on this country.
- Get the scoop at the Newseum, an interactive experience that traces five centuries of news-gathering leaders.
- Remember the sacrifice of American soldiers and their families, and lay a commemorative wreath at the World War II Memorial.
- Continue your exploration of the region’s monuments and memorials at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Korean War Memorial, and Marine Corps War Memorial.
- Visit the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, where you will experience the exhibit Remember the Children: Daniel’s Story. Daniel, age 10, is a composite of the Jewish children who experienced the war.
- Share your thoughts on the day’s events with your peers during your leadership meeting.
Day 3
Washington, D.C. —Understanding U.S. government
- Investigate the U.S. Capitol, and learn more about the branches of government.
- Share lunch with fellow Student Leaders in “the District” before making your way to the Supreme Court, Library of Congress, and other sites on “the Hill.”
- Continue to the National Museum of American History, to appreciate the world’s greatest single collection of American artifacts dating from the War of Independence to the present day.
- Sample international cuisine and hear from accomplished speakers in the field of international diplomacy at an embassy dinner.
- Return to the hotel for your evening leadership meeting.
Day 4
Philadelphia—A nation is born
- Travel to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this morning.
- Stroll through Benjamin Franklin’s city, and learn why the founding fathers believed that “all men are created equal.”
- Take time to view the Liberty Bell and eat lunch in Philadelphia.
- Interact with history at the National Constitution Center, and understand what “we, the people” really means.
- Continue to New York City, and participate in a leadership meeting after check-in at your hotel.
Day 5
New York City—International diplomacy and finance
- Attend an exclusive appointment and private tour of the United Nations.
- Learn about the work of the United Nations firsthand from the Iraqi Ambassador to the UN, Dr. Hamid Al-Bayati.
- Dive in to the New York experience, snapping a picture of the Brooklyn Bridge and touring Lower Manhattan.
- Experience the heart of New York City in bustling Times Square.
- Take in breathtaking views of New York’s skyline from the “Top of the Rock” observation deck at Rockefeller Center.
- Enjoy the best in American entertainment at a Broadway show.
Day 6
New York City—National treasures
- Enjoy a ferry ride for a picture stop at the Statue of Liberty.
- Investigate Ellis Island and get a glimpse of the lives of American immigrants.
- Make your way to Washington, D.C., and meet with your leadership group upon arrival.
Day 7
Washington, D.C.—Capital highlights
- Explore the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, and examine natural and man-made wonders.
- See and learn about the Thomas Jefferson and Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorials.
- Continue your exploration of the region’s presidential memorials at the Washington Monument.
- Soak in the history at the Lincoln Memorial, as you stand on the spot where Martin Luther King Jr. gave his “I have a dream” speech, and then visit D.C.’s newest memorial dedicated to Dr. King.
- Board your motor coach for one last excursion—an entertaining dinner-and-dance cruise on the Potomac River.
- Return to your hotel for a chance to pack, and have your final leadership meeting before saying goodnight.
Day 8
Farewell
- Awake early to enjoy a final breakfast.
- Bid farewell to your new friends, and greet your family or be transported via private shuttle to the airport.
