QWhat is People to People Ambassador Programs?
A People to People Ambassador Programs is the leader in educational travel. We provide travel experience for students and professionals who want to change their world for the better. People to People promotes peace through understanding by giving Ambassadors access to people and places beyond compare. Read more About People to People.

QHow do you identify teachers to become delegation leaders?
A Many of our teachers are recommended to us through Student Ambassadors and their families or by current delegation leaders. Others will find out about People to People through a student, friend, or family member who has participated in a program. All teacher leader applicants go through a screening process before being assigned to a group.

QWhat criteria are used when selecting leaders for the program?
A We require all leader applicants be at least 21 years of age, to pass a background check and personal interview, complete a detailed application, and submit letters of recommendation. All leaders must be CPR certified. To travel on a Student and/or Sports Ambassador Program, leaders must have at least two years of experience with youth and be state certified. For Leadership Programs, teacher leaders may also be retired educators or junior/senior/master’s level education candidates who are going to be teachers. We look for individuals who are active, flexible, and have a positive attitude. Preference is given to current teachers who have classroom experience with students in the 6th through 12th grade.

QWhat would be my responsibilities if selected as a leader?
A Your responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Serve as a contact person for local students
  • Help identify potential Student Ambassadors
  • Organize and conduct student interviews
  • Organize and conduct at least 12 hours of orientation sessions
  • Chaperone Student Ambassadors during the travel portion of the program
  • Complete and mail in an evaluation form for every student in your group

QWhat is the teacher-to-student ratio on the programs?
A One teacher leader is assigned as a chaperone for approximately every 10 students traveling on the program. The delegation manager will provide further support with his or her knowledge of locations visited and with the logistic of the program.

QHow long is summer travel?
A International programs for middle, junior high, and high school delegations are all approximately three weeks in length. International programs for fifth- and sixth-grade students range from two to three weeks in length. Leadership Programs require attendance from 3 to 12 days.

QWhat are the travel dates?
A International travel departure dates are set by Feb. 1 for the coming summer. We work with the local leaders to coordinate the best departure time for their area; however, leaders must be willing to accept any departure date after their school closes. Leadership program dates vary to coincide specifically, but not exclusively, with spring break, summer break, and early fall.

QWhat is the time commitment to participate as a delegation leader?
A The total time commitment varies from program to program, and leader role to leader role. International programs require two or three weeks chaperoning students during the journey and helping them learn about their destinations. In addition, these leaders organize and conduct a minimum of 12 hours worth of educational orientation meetings (materials are provided by the program office). They also act as a program contact for students in their area and participate in the student interview and selection process. Teacher leaders for Leadership Programs typically complete pre-travel assignments, arrive a day before a summit/forum, and stay throughout the program.

QHow are the students chosen for the program?
A Teachers traveling as leaders on the program help us identify outstanding students who would best represent People to People Student Ambassador Programs. We also learn about students through recommendations from teachers, school administrators, and Student Ambassador alumni. Finally, we find out about other students through national academic listings. After students apply, they go through a review and/or interview process to determine their qualifications for acceptance.

QDoes it cost anything for educators to participate?
ANo, leaders can expect to have virtually all of their travel costs covered. Teacher leaders are selected and assigned based on student enrollment, with one leader selected for program-specific leader to student ratio. The leader's personal costs would include passport fees and spending money (meals and lodging are provided). We generally provide total reimbursement for costs associated with identifying and contacting qualified students, conducting interviews, and leading orientation sessions.

QCan I use this experience for continuing education/professional development?
APlease visit our academic credit section for more information.

QIs overseas travel experience required to be a delegation leader?
A It is helpful if leader candidates have traveled with groups of students, domestically or overseas, but this experience is not required.

QDo I need to have a current teaching certificate?
A Preference is given to current teachers who have classroom experience with students in the 6th through 12th grade as many of the challenges that leaders must take on during travel with a delegation are similar to those that occur in a classroom setting. We require that all leader applicants to be at least 21 years of age, to pass a background check and personal interview, complete a detailed application, and submit letters of recommendation. We look for individuals who are active, flexible, and have a positive attitude.

QWould I be required to enlist potential Student Ambassadors on my own?
A Leaders are asked to nominate outstanding students who could be potential Student Ambassadors. These students and their families are invited to information meetings conducted by program directors from our office. As a leader, you would be expected to attend the information meetings and act as a contact for students interested in the program.

QCan my husband/wife travel with me?
A Your spouse may apply to be a leader, with selection based on the same criteria as those of other applicants. If you are assigned as a leader, and your spouse is not, your spouse will not be able to travel with you. Spouses who do travel together as leaders are not guaranteed they will room together throughout the program.

QCan my own child be in the delegation I lead?
A Although children of delegation leaders are welcome to apply to become Student Ambassadors and to join a delegation of their peers, leaders will not be placed in the same delegation as their child. Like all applicants, they are required to go through an interview process and pay the same tuition as other Student Ambassadors.

QWhat if an emergency occurs during travel?
A Leaders are trained in procedures for handling emergency situations that may occur. Each delegation will travel with a delegation manager. This person, as well as our overseas coordinators, will be on hand in case of an emergency. In addition, our office maintains a 24-hour response team to help handle any difficulties or unusual circumstances that may occur during travel.

QAre there any experienced People to People delegation leaders from my area who I can talk to about the program?
A If you would like to meet an experienced People to People delegation leader from your area, we encourage you to attend the local information meeting. If you miss the informational meeting, call our office: 800.669.7882. We will do our best to identify an experienced leader you can contact from your own county or state.
