Loren Greenway, Ph.D., FCCP, FAWM, delegation leader

Loren Greenway, Ph.D., FCCP, FAWM, is the CEO of the Wilderness Medical Society and director of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine. He provides leadership, strategic planning, problem solving, and implementation, evaluation, and follow-up on specific projects in conjunction with the executive committee. He coordinates all aspects of the Wildness Medical Society, including human resource, equipment, publications, and meetings and provides leadership to the membership of the Wilderness Medical Society and Academy of Wilderness Medicine. Prior to this, in September 2008, he retired from his position as administrative director of Pulmonary and Critical Care Services at Intermountain Healthcare in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Dr. Greenway is a member of the board of directors of the Wildness Medical Society, member of the executive committee of the Wilderness Medical Society, and director of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine. He is also a fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine and the American College of Chest Physicians.

He is a board-certified Respiratory Therapy Technician with the National Board of Respiratory Therapy (NBRT), a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) with NBRT, and is licensed by the State of Utah, the Department of Commerce, and the Division of Occupational and Professional Licensure.

Dr. Hawkins

Seth C. Hawkins, MD, FACEP, FAWM, delegation leader

Dr. Hawkins received his undergraduate degree in medical anthropology at Yale University, and completed his medical degree and residency training at UNC-Chapel Hill and the University of Pittsburgh. He has worked for over 15 years in the fields of wilderness medicine and out-of-hospital emergency medical care. He is the Senior Editor of Wilderness Medicine magazine and the Executive Director of the Appalachian Center for Wilderness Medicine, the first non-profit wilderness medicine organization of its kind. He also works as a director/instructor of Lifeguards Without Borders and an assistant professor at Western Carolina University in the first distance-accessible baccalaureate wilderness EMS program in the country. He serves as the medical director for the Burke EMS Special Operations Team, the oldest EMS-based wilderness rescue team in NC, and medical advisor for North Carolina Outdoor Bound. In 2008 the American College of Emergency Physicians named him a "Hero of Emergency Medicine" and Yale University named him "Yalie of the Week" for his activities in wilderness medical care. He was awarded the international BALL Wilderness Medicine Award last year for his contributions to the Wilderness Medical Society. He is an inaugural fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine and has lectured and published around the world on wilderness medicine. When indoors, Dr. Hawkins serves as Chair and medical director of the Grace Hospital Emergency Department in North Carolina (USA) and a director of Mountain Emergency Physicians.

A few words from Dr. Greenway and Dr. Hawkins:

The objectives of this program are multi-factorial: first, to organize an educationally diverse group of individuals with expertise in disaster and mountain medicine and experience in search and rescue operations. Second, to develop a program in which the experience and knowledge of experts in search and rescue can be shared formally through lecture and small group learning, and informally through roundtable discussions with individuals in China that have like interests. Third, to provide a mechanism in which the donation of equipment and supplies to Chinese volunteer search and mountain rescue organizations can occur. Lastly, to further strengthen established contacts and make new friends through social interaction that will foster future professional exchanges of information, research, and collaboration with individuals interested in mountain rescue and wilderness medicine.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the Wilderness Medical Society and People to People Citizen Ambassador Programs. The Wilderness Medical Society is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The Wilderness Medical Society designates this educational activity for a maximum of 15.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Each physician should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
