Richard T. Reckmeyer, DDS, MBA, delegation leader
Richard T. Reckmeyer is the executive director and team leader of Rural Rwanda Dental. After a 2006 safari to eastern Africa, Dr. Reckmeyer fell in love with Rwanda and has explored different ways to give back ranging from volunteering to helping advance tourism to designing Rural Rwanda Dental, an organization to improve the oral health care of those in rural Rwanda. Through his program, he assists in training nurses throughout Rwanda in basic oral health care.
The professional objective is to expose the delegation to all facets of the dental delivery system in Rwanda.
Topics of discussion
The following subjects are of particular interest to this delegation and will be further refined to incorporate the interests and expertise of the individual delegates:
- The educational system (i.e., Kigali Health Institute, the only oral health teaching facility in the country) and its current curriculum, equipment, and patient education
- How Mutuelles de Santé, Rwanda's universal health coverage, affects oral health care
- The needs and concerns of oral health care providers, including higher education, online learning, training nurses to do simple extractions and basic cleanings, and public health training to broaden their base of knowledge
