An active member of the American Medical Athletic Association (AMAA), Kevin D. Steele, Ph.D., is a former chair of the National Academy of Sports Medicine's medical and scientific board. Dr. Steele is currently a principal with Communication Consultants, WBS Inc., a company dedicated to providing high-quality consulting and training for the health and fitness industry worldwide.

Dr. Steele also serves on the International Leadership Council for the International Health, Racquet, and Sportsclub Association and is the chairman of the Power Plate scientific and medical advisory board, as well as the bioDensity medical and scientific advisory board. Additionally, he has served as vice president of research and development at Life Time Fitness and vice president of sports marketing at 24 Hour Fitness.

A few words from Dr. Steele:

Currently the United States is aggressively seeking alternatives for the treatment and prevention of lifestyle-related diseases. We also are evaluating models that efficiently deliver quality care while reducing the escalating costs. Because statistically China has much lower rates of metabolic diseases, this delegation will assess the primary differences between American and Chinese lifestyles and discuss new and different approaches that Americans might adopt to slow and eventually reverse many of the existing trends. Thus, this delegation’s goal is to better understand how we might integrate successful preventive education, behaviors, and tools into our existing system in the U.S.

The following subjects are of particular interest to this delegation and will be further refined to incorporate the interests and expertise of the individual delegates:

  • The extent to which traditional Chinese medicine practices are still present in society and their impact on health and fitness
  • The healthcare system in China and what the country is doing for the prevention of chronic disease
  • Current adult trends in physical activity and their impacts on daily health, functionality, and longevity
  • The impact of Chinese society and family structures on health and wellness
  • The status of obesity and metabolic diseases in China, as well as their economic impact
  • The health and lifestyle of people in rural areas versus that of those in major cities
  • Current strengths and weaknesses of the Chinese healthcare system from a disease-prevention perspective

Continuing-education credit is not available for this delegation.
