Student Ambassadors

QWhat is a local information meeting?
A Local information meetings are conducted by People to People Admissions staff to provide program details to students and families. The primary function of these information meetings is to meet with other students in your delegation and their families. You’ll see video highlights of the program and learn about the history of People to People. You will also receive application materials and meet local teachers involved with People to People Ambassador Programs.

QHow do I reserve my spot at a meeting?
AYou can reserve your space here. Information about your meeting's location, time, and date is also available, and you can confirm seats for you and your parents.

QWhat is a Student Ambassador?
A Student Ambassadors represent their school, community, state, and country while traveling abroad. They learn about other cultures, engage in fun activities, and meet local citizens. Student Ambassadors come from diverse backgrounds, but share common traits: a curious and adventurous spirit, an open mind and heart, the desire to learn about other cultures and people, and the belief in President Eisenhower’s vision that each person can make a difference and help to achieve peace through understanding.

QWill an experience as a Student Ambassador prepare me for my next level of education?
A Every People to People Student Ambassadors Program provides a unique opportunity for educational growth, which can help give you an edge in the classroom. In addition, academic credit and service-learning hours are available per program and age requirements.

High school students: Your involvement as a Student Ambassador can provide you with a competitive edge in your college application process and applications for scholarships. Student Ambassador alumni have found that their experiences with People to People helped them answer many interview questions and, in some cases, provided the theme for admissions and scholarship essays.

Junior high / middle school: Starting off on the right foot in high school is critical to your success. Your experience as a Student Ambassador will prepare you to be more confident, responsible, and assertive. The alumni students and parents you meet at the information meetings will share how their participation in a People to People Student Ambassador Program prepared them for the years to follow. Elementary school: For many students, the transition from grade school to junior high or middle school can be a challenging time. By participating in a People to People Student Ambassador Program, students will gain valuable skills to help them succeed in the transition, including social interaction, time management skills, self-confidence, respect for others, and how to make smart choices.

QHow do I become a Student Ambassador?
A All students who apply to the program are interviewed and submit three letters of recommendation before acceptance. Once on their program, Student Ambassadors are expected to create a positive impression of our country and culture, whether making a good impression in a school visit overseas, meeting local citizens, or attending a briefing with a government representative. This diplomatic spirit is one of the things that sets the People to People experience apart; our Student Ambassadors are global students and teachers of their own culture.

QWhat sets a People to People journey apart from other student travel programs?
APeople to People has a clear mission: to provide students with unparalleled access to people and places beyond compare, preparing them for success in a globalized world by making friends locally and globally. Student Ambassadors visit schools, experience homestays, absorb world culture through firsthand exploration, meet with government experts, and enjoy unique insider access to significant people and places. Student Ambassadors prepare for this experience well in advance and are asked to keep a daily journal and participate fully in all activities for academic credit. Students build their leadership skills while working as a team with other students and making friends in a well-supervised environment of cultural exploration. Comparing cultures and ways of life helps students promote peace through understanding—the very mission of People to People.

QHow do Student Ambassadors prepare for travel?
A The People to People experience starts long before you board the plane. After you complete the selection process, orientation meetings will prepare you for what you’ll see and do throughout travel. We carefully select the educators who lead the orientation meetings and accompany students on the program. They have educational backgrounds and experience in the classroom, and they undergo extensive training in People to People procedures. We also provide informational packets and online correspondence that provide details regarding what to pack, key information about the culture of the destination country(ies), passport and visa requirements, and much more.

QWhat does a People to People Student Ambassador Program look like?
APeople to People Student Ambassador Programs vary in location, length, focus, and activity level. Each program has unique activities and cultural experiences in the countries we explore. But no matter which program students choose, our programs offer premium travel experiences:
  • Exclusive Access – Behind-the-scenes activities that are available only to Student Ambassadors.
  • Educational Content – As a Student Ambassador, the world is your classroom. You'll learn from the finest historians, educational experts, and professional guides. In addition, you'll be better prepared for success in the classroom now and in the future.
  • Expert Safety – Trained leaders and precision planning make for a smooth and worry-free experience.
  • Friendship and Fun – Students will make lifetime friendships with fellow delegates as well as new friends from around the world as they participate in exciting adventures and hands-on cultural experiences.

QWhat unique experiences are available to Student Ambassadors?
A Every People to People program is carefully designed with our students and our mission in mind. Student Ambassadors often have school visits or one-on-one experiences with local families overseas. Our presidential history allows students access behind the scenes in many of the countries we visit. The wide variety of cultural interactions opens an entirely new world for our Ambassadors. Many of our students return with a new perspective on the world and their expanded role as a global citizen.

QHow can I make a difference in the world through People to People?
AOur Student Ambassadors return home with a new perspective on the world. They see people and places on television or in a textbook and can say they have been there. But more importantly, they value the importance of understanding other people and other cultures. Often, this global perspective creates interest in new career paths for some of our Ambassadors or identifies new subjects that they want to study in school. By representing their family and their country to others, Student Ambassadors recognize the power an individual has to affect positive change.

QIn what types of service projects do Ambassadors take part?
A To date, People to People delegates have clocked over 100,000 service hours for communities around the world. Some of our international projects include:
  • Re-forestation efforts in Malta
  • Visiting children at an SOS Children’s Village in Italy
  • Environmental projects from Europe to the South Pacific
Here in the United States, projects have included:
  • Supporting food banks
  • Writing letters and preparing care packages for our soldiers
  • Making and distributing blankets to the needy
  • Graffiti abatement

QHow many credits do Student Ambassadors earn?
A Students who travel on our programs can qualify for several forms of academic credit applicable to program and grade. Students in grades 9 -12 are automatically enrolled in the tuition-paid course “Ambassadorial Studies” offered through the Washington School of World Studies and earn the equivalent of one high school semester elective credit. In addition, students in grades 7 – 8 may enroll for one credit, and students in grades 9 -12 for up to 12 credits, through Eastern Washington University .

QWhat is the tuition cost of the program?
AThe all-inclusive program tuition cost will depend on the program you select. Each program we offer is a very unique, educational, and cultural experience. Therefore, the tuition for each program varies depending on the program’s location, length, and itinerary. The tuition for our programs range are all-inclusive; including pre-program education and preparation, program activities, accommodations, transportation, supervision, program apparel, academic credit, three meals per day, and group insurance.
